Rushden Soldier - Officially Reported Wounded - Anxiety Concerning Lance-Corpl H A Mantle
Among the official lists of wounded Northants men issued this week occurs the name of Lance-Corpl H A Mantle, 18604, son of Mrs and Mrs Arthur Mantle of 124, Queen-street, Rushden. Mr and Mrs Mantle have also received an official intimation that their son has been injured, the War Office letter stating that he was wounded on July 14th, in the attack on Trones Wood. The anxious parents have heard nothing further, and would be glad of any information about their son from any of his comrades at the front or elsewhere.

SOLDIER'S DEATH - Mr Arthur Mantle of Queen-street, Rushden, school attendance officer for Rushden and district, has now received official news that his son, Lance-Corpl Howard Mantle, Northants Regt., reported missing since the attack at Trones Wood on July 14th, 1916 is now presumed by the military authorities to have been killed on or about that date. The deceased soldier, who was 19 years of age, was, on leaving school attached to the telegraph service for two years, and was then apprenticed at Mr Owen Parker's factory at Higham Ferrers, where he remained up to the time of enlisting. Three days after attaining his 18th birthday he joined the Colours. In May 1916, he was home on leave and returned to his unit on May 12th - his 19th birthday. He was trained at Colchester, and was sent out to France after thee months.
