In August 1944 a unit of USAF men of the 860 Ordnance Heavy Auto Maintenance Company came to Rushden.

The unit was based in Hall Park and these huts were erected along the avenue of elm trees that used to stand along the main path from Hall Avenue entrance towards the Hall.

Clifford Keaton was one of those men. His son Michael has sent in these two pictures that Clifford has kept to remind him of that time. He had written on one that he "arrived Rushden 19th August 1943, left for France on July 3 1944."

The 893 Ordnance Heavy Auto Maintenance Company was also based in Rushden.

Other USAF units were based at Chelveston and Podington airfields during WWII.
