This firm, manufacturers of the "Walker" brand of gent’s and boys' reliable footwear for home, Continental, and foreign markets, was established in 1870 by the later Mr. Walter Sargent. The partners are Mrs. E. Bradfield, Mr. W. E. Sargent, and Mr. W. L. Sargent.
Increasing trade necessitated a factory extension in 1904, and 3½ years ago a further addition to the works was made, when all the old plant was replaced by an installation of the latest British United Machinery throughout. This enabled them to cope in an up-to-date manner with large quantities of Goodyear-welt, fair-stitched, standard-screwed, and M.S. footwear. The firm keep thoroughly abreast of the times in patterns and lasts by having them specially designed by one of the best Northampton last makers. The principals personally supervise the factory, Mr. W. E. Sargent taking the upper department and Mr. W. L. Sargent talking the bottom-stock and packing departments. They travel Scotland, the North of England, South Wales, and the Midlands, being personally assisted by Mr. F. Darlow for London and export. Considerable business is done in France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Egypt, South Africa, West Indies, and the Far Fast, as they have lines specially adapted for these markets. The growth of the firm has been very constant, and their goods are sound, durable and smart. The principals are keen, alert business men, who are able and willing to do all in their power for the development of the concern.
