Mr Horace Waring, the new Vice-chairman, is the first journalist to fill that position. A native of Rushden, he is unmarried and resides at 10 Woodland-road. He was formerly on the staff of the “Rushden Echo” and then served the “Echo and Argus” for some time.

In 1916-17 Mr Waring served in the R.A.F., doing radio and photographic work. Durin

g the war period he was with the “Bedford Standard” and later with the “Tiverton Gazette” (Devon).

At the Council by-election in May 1936, Mr Waring was the only nominee for the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. George W Coles. During his eight years on the Council as a Labour member he has been chairman of the Highways and Parks Committees, and has served on all other committees for varying periods.

On the withdrawal of Mr J S Denton in July 1936, Mr Waring became a member of the Wellingborough Guardians Committee, thus following the example of his mother, who was for several years a member of the old Board of Guardians.

He is a member of the British Legion and of the Rushden Labour Party executive, and for ten years has served on the management committee of the Rushden Co-operative Society. As a teacher of short-hand he has been on the staff of the Rushden Evening Institute for several years.
