Charles Athur Kersey Green (1862-1947) who was always called ‘Zooney’ – but nobody knows how he got his nickname.
Zooney was born on 28th November 1862 in Rushden, the son of William Green and Jane Kersey.
William Green started making shoes at his home in 1866 before establishing William Green and Son shoe factory in High Street South in 1874. The factory later moved to a purpose built large factory on the corner of Queen Street and Cromwell Road in 1895.
In 1891 Zooney married Mary Catherine Sanders (1861-1928) and together they had four children Sidney, Reginald, Algernon and Donald.
Zooney moved his from 1 Crabb Street to a large house built in the Hayway, and they remained there until 1920 when he acquired Knuston Hall. Following the death of his first wife, Zooney married in 1934, Grace Emily Ashdown (1893-1976).
During the Second World War the parkland around Knuston Hall was used as an Army Camp but the Green family remained in the house. Zooney died on the 27th April 1947 and was buried in Newton Road Cemetery, grave F218.

Knuston Hall was sold in 1949 to Northamptonshire County Council for use as an Adult Education College, which closed in January 2022.
The company moved to the Crown Park Estate in 2013 and apartments were built on the Queen Street factory site.
