I recognised the Soap Box Car shown on the cover of the 1951 Programme for the National Championship Finals, as the car that my Father, Leonard Hardern, built for the local Manchester Scout Group. My Father built the car in the cellar of the Scout Master's house. The Scout Master, Eric Noble, lived next door to us at 50 Northen Grove, West Didsbury, Manchester. I believe that this Soap Box car was called 'Cascarda Sagrada' (a well known laxative at the time !!).
I seem to remember that the car was quite successful at the Scarborough Finals in 1951.
I have attached photographs of the car being built in the Scout Master's cellar. In one photograph you will see my older brother Michael sitting in the car with myself sitting on the bench. I was approximately 2 years old at the time.
I have also attached a photo of myself (dressed in Scouts Uniform) taken with members of the Manchester Scout Group at the 1951 Scarborough races.
Later on after the Scouts had no more use for the car it was given back to my brother and I have very vivid memories of us driving the car up and down Northen Grove in Manchester in the 1950s and 1960s!!!
