Rushden Argus November 11th 1921, transcribed by Susan Manton

A Rushden Porker’s Extraordinary Weight

Mr Houghton and the pigs

Mr. S. Houghton, of 11, Windmill-road, Rushden, sends this picture of a couple of pigs bred by him on ground near the Washbrook Road. The right hand pig, a cross-bred, is nine and a half months old, and weighs no less that 17 stone 1lb. Mr. Houghton believes that weight to be a record for animals of the same age and would like to know if anyone has a “finer” porker than his.

Rushden Echo, 22nd June 1923, transcribed by Kay Collins

Trial Farm Visited—Over 50 members of the Rushden and District Pig Club went by Mr. Scroxton’s charabanc on Saturday to the Northants County Council’s experimental farm at Moulton, the visit having been arranged at the invitation of Mr. W. A. Stewart, M.A., B.Sc., who is in charge of the piggeries there. Mr. Stewart gave an interesting talk to the members on the methods he was adopting, and he answered numerous questions satisfactorily. The party then went round the fruit farm, Mr. H. J. Wyles, F.R.Hort.S., conducting. The demonstrations lasted two hours. Tea was served at the granary on the fruit farm by Mrs. Wells. Mr. W. Steele (president of the Rushden Pig Club) moved thanks to Mr. Stewart and Mr. Wyles for their kind assistance. Mr. George Kent (Higham) seconded, and it was carried. Mr. Stewart responded for Mr. Wyles and himself. Thanks were also accorded to Mrs. Wells, on the proposition of Mr. A. G. Thomason, seconded by Mr. H. Travil, Mrs. Wells suitable replying. On the return journey an hour was spent in Northampton, and the party arrived home about 9.30p.m., after a profitable outing.
