Rectory Field Sale
Comment on the proposed sale of the Rectory Field is made by Mr. F. E. Andrews, rector's warden, in the January issue of Rushden St. Mary's Magazine.

"Three years ago," he says, "the benefice income of St. Mary's was well above the minimum stipend, but with increasing inflation it is now below the minimum, and when this happens the diocese guarantees to bring it up to the minimum from the diocesan stipends fund.....

"But the diocese very reasonably and rightly say that they do not see why they should advance this money if an incumbent has attached to his benefice some land which is of no use to him and which could be sold profitably, the capital being invested by the Church Commissioners and the income raising the benefice above the minimum standard.

"Now this is, in fact, the present position as far as St. Mary's Church goes. The rector possesses this field attached to his benefice; it is not now used for any purpose whatever and it is so uneven that it is unlikely ever to be used again for serious sport.

"No doubt in due course," adds Mr. Andrews, "the rector will probably wish to give the full facts to the Church Council, and those of us who know all the facts are in no doubt about the rightness his action."
