Alfred George Collins Vann came from a working class background. He was the School Master at South End Elementary School in Rushden in 1885 and his wife, Hannah Elizabeth Simpson Vann was a certificated teacher at the same school. Whilst at Rushden he studied and frequently attended courses at Oxford University [see Log Book] gaining an MA in 1898. In 1899 Alfred George Collins Vann became Head Master of Chichele Grammar School, and in 1900 advertised to open another – the Rushden Grammar School, in Church Street. His son Bernard Wm Vann was awarded the Victoria Cross in WWI.
Another son, Arthur was also killed in WWI:
Note: This school did not last, as J E Smith, in his overview of early schools in Rushden, in 1917, makes no mention of a grammar school in Rushden. The Grammar School at Higham Ferrers was closed in 1906, so perhaps this caused the family to leave? |
