Report by H M I Mr W J Hands 29 May/06 June visits
The tone of this school and, in a great measure, the work also continue to be worthy of much praise.
Apart from the soundness of the science teaching and the Arithmetic of the senior classes, the excellent average level of the Drawing, and the neat and correct work in written English, the most striking feature of the school is the unity of aims and method and the healthy co-operation among the teachers and children. The Headmaster is responsible for this, and also for the thoroughness with which most of the work is done, but his influence so exerted quite spontaneously and the teachers are not unduly restricted in the matter of adherence to a particular syllabus; latitude so allowed and individual initiative find scope for exercise.
Although the Headmaster is loyally supported according to their several abilities by colleagues who have been stimulated by his vigorous supervision and tactful encouragement, the staff as a body cannot be considered particularly strong and it speaks well for the organisation that such highly satisfactory results are obtained by the time the children reach the upper standards. Generally speaking, no class below standard 5 shows any real brilliancy of handling, but the work from this point to the top of the school is without doubt unusually sound and comprehensive. The mistress in charge of the highest class is a tower of strength to the school; not only is her work of outstanding merit but her personal influence over the boys and girls has far reaching results.
Throughout the school the children are eager to learn they are allowed great freedom both in comment and enquiry. Are encouraged to find out things for themselves and, especially in their Handwork, to exercise their own individuality.
The two upper classes are accustomed to self-employment when their teachers are called away: they do not willingly let slip opportunities of self activity and the general appearance of tidiness and alertness is very attractive.
Although peculiarly sound results of good teaching in English were seen in Standard 7 the whole of this side of the training is a shade lacking in imagination. More dramatising for the younger scholars, rather higher pitch of effort in some of the Recitation and a little more emphasis on poetry ... the older children ... ... ... ...the note unnaturally, lead to a further appreciation of fine thought and language and thence to a really high standard of essay writing in the top classes.
Certain minor points were discussed with the Headmaster at the inspection and it is understood that these will be considered when the plans for the next year’s work are being prepared.
From time to time valuable help and inspiration have been given to other teachers who have been permitted by the Authority to visit the school for the purpose of observation and the unfailing courtesy shown by the Headmaster ... ... ... is worthy of mention
