Report H M I Dated 28 Feb 1919
|
|
Changes in the personnel of the staff, an abnormal number of teachers’ absences due to sickness and many closures owing to epidemics, lack of fuel etc. have all tended to disorganise the school and to militate against the efficiency of the teaching.
In some directions however there are indications of improvement in the general efficiency of the school compared with what was noticed at the time of the last visit and a sincere attempt appears to have been made to remedy defects to which attention was then drawn.
Classification still continues to be very low. In a school of over 360 children it is surprising to find that so few scholars reach standard 7. It is obvious that a large number of children must attain the leaving age without having completed the whole school course.
The temporary Head Teacher attributes this weakness to the lateness of promotion from the Infants to the Mixed Department.
There is a manifest lack of co-ordination between the work of the two Departments. Until a closer co-operation exists a certain amount of wastage of educational effort must of necessity result.
The general tone and discipline of the school are praiseworthy. Arithmetic is still a weak subject and is too bookish and academic in character and not sufficiently connected with practical matters of everyday experience.
Composition and English subjects generally show signs of improvement, especially in the upper standards (4 6) where the quality of the teaching is much better than in the lower parts of the school.

Report H M I W J Hands 05 July 1921
Mixed Dept
The school owes much to the inspiration and zeal of the Headmaster, and has more than regained its pre-war efficiency. Discipline and tone are excellent.
So much good work is being done in the school that it would be invidious to single out any class for mention, but special praise must be given to the excellence of the work in Arithmetic, Drawing and Illustrative handwork as well as to the clearness and distinctiveness of articulation & enunciation which mark the Reading and Recitation.
