Report H M I

This is a thoroughly good school.  The order is excellent, the schemes of work are full and carefully arranged, and very good progress is being made throughout.

The main room should be divided by a partition.  The lobby doors should open outwards.

There is insufficient cloakroom accommodation.  Four additional closets are required for the girls; there should be a closet for the male teachers; the urinal accommodation for the boys is quite inadequate.

Report

The accommodation of this large department is overtaken. There are 564 children on the registers and the present recognised accommodation is for 492.  This includes an allowance of 100 in the Central Hall which is entirely filled with desks.  As there are seven classrooms in the school, it is very desirable that some part of the Central Hall should be left unencumbered with desks and that its use for class-teaching should be restricted to one class only.

On four days of the week two classes are taught in the Hall, and on Thursdays when one class room has to be given over to cookery teaching, there are three large classes in the Hall numbering about 160 scholars.  This arrangement makes satisfactory work a very difficult matter indeed.  The building of a new classroom as a cookery centre is a question demanding early consideration.

Some provision should also be made for teaching woodwork to the boys of this and other schools in Rushden.

The references in the last report to the cloakroom accommodation, boys’ urinal etc. are again commended to the notice of the Authority.  Generally speaking the work is done in an energetic and intelligent manner.  Arithmetic and its cognate subjects are skilfully taught; object teaching and drawing are well done.  The lessons in Geography appear to suffer to some extent from a tendency to discursiveness on the part of the teachers.  Until the teacher of the lower division of Stand 2 can engage the interest of his scholars in their work, it will not be possible to secure their attention or to ensure their normal progress.

The defects to which H M Inspector calls attention should be made good without further delay.  (Art 18 Code).
