Mr J T Colson visited the schools this morning.

Florence Harper is taking Standard 2 boys and Jennie Bayes Standard 2 girls under my supervision.  I am taking Standards 6 and 7 in order that Mr Williams may have Standard 5 alone for arithmetic.  The classes under him have not made the progress I should have liked.

18 Jan

05 Feb

Average 279.  On roll 224 boys, 148 girls.

08 Feb

Mr Payne still absent.

The papers worked by the various standards in the week ending February 5th being the end of the extended period owing to so many being absent in December, were very satisfactory with the exception of Standard 5.  This standard is in charge of Mr Williams, trained teacher, but the work is behind that of the other classes.  In October last I took standards 6 and 7 from him for Arithmetic and Composition as I was dissatisfied with the quality and style of work; even this does not seem to have enabled him to make any difference in the work produced by Standard 5.  I cannot get in to do much in this standard as 2, 3, 6 and 7 are now under my immediate charge.  The teacher appointed to succeed Miss price cannot begin duties until next month and Mr Payne is away sick.

Copy of Report

“The school is conducted with much intelligence and the supervision and influence of the Head Teacher are everywhere apparent.  The children are extremely well behaved and are making excellent progress in all their work.  In some classes Handwriting will need a little attention and the proportions of the letters should be observed.  In nearly all the classes the number of children is too large for the staff employed, and the staff should be considerably strengthened so that the head Teacher may be more free to superintend the work of such a large school.  The desks in the classrooms should not be more than four rows deep and the number in each classroom should not exceed the accommodation.  The paths leading to the various entrances should be asphalted.”

Hebert Holyoake 1st Year   Failure

Emily Groome       Candidate, passed Arithmetic and Geography.

It appears from her medical certificate that she has not been successfully vaccinated.  Until this operation has been effectively performed My Lords cannot, both for her own sake and in the interests of the children attending the school, consent to her engagement.

Mr Cresswell, teacher of Standard 4, works hard with his class but raises a spirit of antagonism to himself in the minds of his boys.  The cheerful, willing and earnest manner in which they were wont to attack their work vanishes within a few minutes of getting to class work.  The cause lies entirely in the teacher’s hands.  He says he cannot cultivate that sympathetic spirit which should obtain between teacher and class.  After many conversations with him on the subject I feel compelled to make this statement in justice to the class which in common with the remainder of the school has always seemed desirous of producing the best work.

Report

“This school well maintains its high reputation for careful and intelligent instruction and the behaviour of the scholars is exemplary.  The Head Teacher’s supervision is thorough and great attention is paid to every detail of school work.  The handwriting of the first standard seems to be the weak point, which demands increased attention, but the general character of the written work is creditable.

The certificate of Mr Cresswell will be issued after the 14th December 1898, upon application to the Board, if he continues in this school till that date.
