Report by H M Inspectors 21st and 22nd February 1967.

There are 356 children in this school taught in nine classes.  The classes are divided into two streams and there is a remedial class containing the least able pupils from the first three years.  The A stream classes are over large, having 47, 45, 48 and 45 children in them; the B stream classes number 39, 35,40 and 36.  These latge numbers make it possible to have a remedial class of only 21 pupils but whilst this is very desirable, the numbers in many of the classes are so large that they do not permit a close contact bteween teachers and individual pupils or the full development of practical and creative work in all subjects.

In spite of the fact that an extra classroom has been built, the hall has still to be used for teaching thus depriving the children of any form of physical eductaion when the weather is unsuitable for outside work.  Some indoor sanitation has been provided for the younger girls which may also be used for the older girls in bad weather.  The boys’ urinal needs attention.  An outbuilding which has been equiped in a rough and ready way as a workshop is now also used for television viewing.  The proposal to make the room more comfortable by redecorating it and providing better heating and lighting will extend the use of this valuable space without necessarily diminishing the opportunities it affords for handwork.

The Headmaster was appointed in 1955.  His confidence and experience, energy and careful organisation ensure the smooth running of the school.  There are eight permanent members of staff, five of whom are in their first teaching posts and three in their first year of teaching.  Together they form a loyal and hardworking staff.  A vacancy is being filled for the time being by a supply teacher.

In the main the children read well but greater efforts are needed if the few least able pupils are not to leave this school unable to read without at least a minimum degree of fluency.  In quality as well as quantity the written work being done by the A stream pupils is good and the topics about which they write are interesting and appropriate.  There is a growing regard being paid to some aspects of modern mathematics but this type of work has not yet become fully established.  The teaching of history, geography and some science is done either through the medium of television or through the study of various general topics.  Whilst these studies are broadly conceived and the writing neatly and thoughtfully done the presentation of the work might be given more consideration and might, on occasions, provide opportunities for artistic expression.  The girls make usefull articles in their Needlework lessons and the boys make various models in cardboard which call for accurate measurement and care.  The children sing with vigour and those who play the recorder do so with confidence and skill.  Music and puppet making are strong features of the work both of which lead to performances for parents and friends.

The strength of the teaching is reflected in the more formal written work; the orderliness of the school may be attributed to the inspiration and vigilance of the teachers.  From assembly in the morning and throughout the day, the childre, many of whom are members of large classes, are for the most part attentive, polite and ready to learn.

05 May

400 children provide varied concert

OVER 400 children took part in the Rushden and District Schools' Music Festival, held al the Ritz Cinema, Rushden, last night. By means of a seven-tier stand, and by highly organised arrangement, all the children were massed on the stage at once, and a continuous programme of music wan presented.

Choirs from Higham Ferrers. Raunds, Rushden Alfred Street. Rushden Newton Road and Rushden South End .primary schools joined with senior choirs from Raunds Secondary Modern School, Rushden Secondary Modern School for Boys and Rushden Secondary Modern School for Girls, to provide a full and varied concert.

INFANTS

There were also two spots on the programme tor the infants from the district to perform.  They opened the programme with percussion items, and closed the first half with six songs.  This was the first time that infants had sung at the festival, which had not been held for two years.

There was one solo item, a cornet solo by 13-year-old Henry Monaghan, of Raunds Secondary Modern School, who received a great ovation for his performance of the slow movement from a trumpet concerto by Haydn.

The choirs combined for severaI of the songs, and considering they had only had one-combined practice—on the morning of the festival—they kept remarkably well together.  The only drawback was that when a descant had to. be sung, as in "The Snowy Breasted Pearl," an old Irish air arranged by E. Sharpe. all ihe schools had practised the descant, leaving very few to provide the actual song.

This was one of the few songs in which the boys’ choirs came into their own and were really noticable.

Rushden Alfred Street provided a good and popular novelty in the form of a bamboo pipe band.

Several items were introduced by the conductor, mr Stanley Thorne, county musical adviser, who conducted all the massed choral songs and the senior groups.

Miss Ruth Hodgkins (Alfred Street School) and Mrs Alice Goddard (Rushden secondary Modern School for Girls) accompanied the cchoirs.
