8.50am School re-opened.

Miss E M Bull is out of hospital, but she will not return to school for several weeks.

Miss F M Scott is taking Miss Bull’s place with 4A class.

Mr J Hardwick began his duties today and  has taken over 1B class.

14 Jan

School closed am session for A S E – 2nd part – 50 children from this school sat the examination.

Mr F C Astle and Mr Mitchell of South End Jnr acted as Hon invigilators.  Mr F Dyment and Mrs Edge of this school were at Alfred St Junior.

The % attendance last week was 52% - the lowest percentage for many years.  More children are returneing, but others are catching colds and attendance is low. 

Miss Haynes of the permanent emergency staff arrived this morning and is taking 4A.  The Headmaster is still taking 1A, and 1B class is divided half to Mr Dyment and half to Mrs Dyment.

Rushden and District Schools Music Festival at 7pm in the Ritz Cinema.  This school took part in all Junior songs and sang two songs as individual items.

The Medical Officer of Health examined all children in 2B class.  Cases of scarlet fever have been occuring in this class.

A school secretary has been appointed to help with clerical work and other suitable tasks.  The help given is for 15 hours per week, since this school has some 400 children on roll.  Mrs G Hornsey has been appointed.

33 children went to the Central Hall, Birmingham at 10.30.  18 took part in the Midland Festival of The English Folk Dance and Song Society.  They were accompanied by Mr Muncey and Mr Whitworth their dancing teachers.  The school timetable was adjusted accordingly.

Mr T Rose ended his duties as caretaker today.  On Friday he was presented with a mirror and a clock by the Headmaster.  The staff of the Infants School had contributed to the presents as well as the staff and pupils of the Junior School.

A S E Results 1960

17 children qualified for Grammar Schools.

7 qualified for grammar or technical school and will be interviewed.

1 qualified for W’boro’ technical school.

6 will be interviewed as “borer-line” candidates for admission to the technical school.

Since the interviews took place, twelve girls have been offered places at the High School, seven boys offered places at the Grammar School and four boys and four girls places at the Mixed Technical School.

All schools closed at the express wish of her Majesty the Queen, to celebrate the wedding of Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret to Mr Anthony Armstrong Jones.

School closed for an outing to St Albans 1A and 1B and 10 staff went.  On the way we stopped to see the Moot Hall and Church at Elstow, John Bunyan’s birthplace.  At St Albans we were taken round the cathedral and visited the Roman Museum and Theatre.

David Alan Chettle broke his arm when he fell from the P T apparatus in the girls’ playground.  He was taken to kettering gen Hospital by ambulance.

Road Safety Cycling tests in playground for 29 children taken by Mr Valvona (County and District Road safety Officer).

Dist School Sports

This school won the Johnson Cup for the school with the best performance, other than by a school winning a premier award.  Many children won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Mr D Leeding leaves today and will teach at Wollaston Secondary Modern next term. Mr Neville was presented with a camera and Mr Leeding received an electric clock from the staff and children.

Education Week

At Northampton College of Technology a party of twenty parents and teachers visited the exhibition (4th day).  After visiting the exhibition they stayed for the County Music Festival 7pm – 9pm.

School Doctor attended with School Nurse and voluntary workers for the fourth dose of the vaccine for protection against Poliomyelitis.  Approx 250 children had injections this morning.

116 children and all members of staff went to London at 9am.  Visits were paid to the Science museum, the Natural History Museum.  These were followed by a river trip from Westminster to Battersea Park Gardens.  After tea, two hours were spent at the Pleasure Gardens.

Mrs A U Muxlow C C presented 41 Cycling Proficiency Certificates to the children this morning.  She attended morning service at 9am and spoke to the children about Road Safety after making the presentations.  Only the top five classes were in the hall.

The whole school assembled at 11am.  During the service an electric clock was presented to Mr Bilsborough as a wedding gift from the staff and children.

Mr H E Sanders, an old boy of this school and the present Chief Constable of Blackpool, visited the school this morning.  He visited his old classroom and met the staff at playtime.

Forty children accompanied by Mr Muncey and Mr Whitworth went to Birmingham at 9.15am.  24 were dancing and 16 were spectators at the Festival of Folk Danceand song sposored by the English Folk Dance and Song Society in the Central Hall.  The children have been preparing for this Festival throughout the term.  The class meets on Thursdays at 4pm in the Infants school Hall.
