09 Jan

School re-opened after the Christmas holiday.

Mrs M J Edge absent – sick.

Mrs S E Cockerill commenced duties as a temporary teacher.

Roll this term 376 children.

3 classrooms were decorated during the holiday.  The new classroom is almost completed and will be used to house various classes whilst the redecoration of the school continues.  4B clasroom is not available and the class is in the new classroom.

Mrs Edge returned.

Miss M Sewell absent – sick.

4B returned to 4B classroom.  3B classroom is being redecorated and 3B occupy the new classroom.

 

A S E Qualifying Test

56 children qualified to sit the examination on Jan 23rd. – all 1A class and 11 from 1B class.

14 Jan

Miss M Sewell absent.

15 Jan

Miss M Sewell returned.

The decorators continue with their work and this necessitates constant re-arrangement of classes and classroom accommodation – 2B and 1B classes are affected at the moment.

23 Jan

56 children sat the final part of the A S E this morning – Diane Cross absent – Gillian britchford has gone to London – Lynda cuthbert was sick and unable to complete the examination.

School was closed for the morning session, apart from the presence of the examinees.

Mr F Dyment and Mrs M J Edge acted as Hon Invigilators at Rushden Alfred St School.  Mr F Astle and Mr Mitchell acted as Hon Invigilators here.

Nation-wide survey of health, growth and development of children born during the period 3rd – 9th Mar 1946.  In connection with the survey John Birch and Peter King were given a full medical examination this morning by the school doctor.

All classrooms have now been decorated (apart from the store room – 2B classroom.  The hall will be decorated when the painters return.

Diane Cross went to W’boro’ Park St Girls’ S M School to take her A S E written tests.  Lynda cuthbert – due to take the Arithmetic paper only is still in hospital.  An allowance will be given by the cief examiner – see letter of feb 9th ’57 ref S/KFA from the Chief Education Officer.

Pm session and feb 15 am session – the school dentist examined the teeth of all children present.

Wed 9am School re-opened. 

The decorators have returned and are working in the school hall.  No morning assembly is possible and no children can enter the hall except 4B class.  Music classes continue but several are taken withou the use of the piano.

Gary Harlow has won the Junior 1st prize for Art in the County Competition organised by Brooke Bond and Co Ltd.  He received a voucher to purchase five Saving Cerificates worth £3-15s.

25 Jul

School closed at 4pm for the Summer holiday.

Mr Bernard Dunne leaves today and has obtained a departmental post in a lrge secondary modern school near Chelmsford.  He was presented with a nest of coffee tables by the staff and pupils.

Miss M Sewell’s marriage takes place tomorrow and since she will be living in Northampton, she has obtained a teaching post there.  AS her leaving present, she chose six wine goblets.

Mrs S E Cockerill is hoping to get supply teaching in Wellingborough next term and she was given a small present as well.

05 Sep

Miss C E Sanders commenced her duties as a temporary teacher.

Mr Bob Whitworth is acting as supply teacher in charge of 2B class.

In view of Miss sanders’ complete lack of teaching experience, I have decided to take 1C class for as long as possible in order that she can gain experience of her duties.

Beekeeping essay awards

Sylvia cook, a scholar at Rushden Newton Road Junior School, takes first prize for an essay on beekeeping in the competition promoted by Northamptonshire Agicutural Society in conjunction with Northamptonshire Beekeepers’ Association.

Thomas Rippin, of the same school, is awarded a fourth prize.  There were 30 entries.

 

Sylvia joins husband as a vet

Mrs R L Betteridge, formerly Miss S S C... of 27 Church Lane, Newton Bromswold, has recently passed her finals at the Royal Veterinary College, London.

She becomes a bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and a member of the Royal College of veterinary Surgeons.

Before going to London University, Sylvia was educated at Newton Road Schools, Rushden and the County High School, Wellingborough.  She is the first girl from the High School to take up veterinary work. 

Her husband Roger is also a veterinary surgeon, having qualified at the same college previously.

Annual Schools Examination

School closed for the morning session, in order that the examinees should have the necessary rooms available.  4 rooms used for 116 candidates.  Mr F C Astle of South End Jnr School was the Invigilator here along with members of his staff.

Priscilla Muncey and Robin Barker were absent.  Barker has been in hospital for some time and Priscilla had to go for an X ray on her foot.

Miss scott unable to get to school due to the heavy snowstorm raging.  Several of the staff were late.  I had to abandon my car before I reached Rushden.  Many children were absent and the bus children left for home at 3.15pm.  A special school bus was sent before the roads became impassable.

Miss Scott not able to get in again.  The children from Newton bromswold could not get to school today.

Roads much improved and both staff and children had no difficulties.

School closed at 4pm for the Easter holiday.

Mrs F M Brook (Miss Baker) ceased duty at this school today.  She attended this school as a pupil and joined the staff on 7.9.42.  She was presented with an electric toaster and an electric kettle by the staff and children.

National songs were sung.  The Union Jack was hoisted and the National Anthem sung.  The older children were given a talk by the Headmaster and the smaller children were given short talks by their teachers.

Swimming classes commenced at Rushden baths – sixty children went today 10.45am to noon.

School closed all day to enable teachers to attend a National Union of Teachers Refresher Course at Henry Gotch Schools, Kettering, today and tomorrow.

Swimming classes re-organised since we have been given an extra period on Fridays.

Schools’Sports postponed till next Thursday due to the heavy rain yesterday and the present state of the field.

School closed for the District Schools’ Sports.  We gained several eirst, second and third places and came fourth in the Schools’ Championship with 35 points and thus failed to retain the Capon Shield which we won last year.

School closed at noon for the half day.  Holiday was granted for very good attendance.

23 Jul

All children from 1A, 1B and 1C classes went to the swimming baths.  There will be no class on Friday this week.  The children are taking part in a friendly swimming match with Alfred St School.

25 Jul

Miss C E Sanders absent am session – medical examination for College.

Assembly at 11am when Sports certificates and Road Proficiency Diplomas, Badges and Cycle Penants were presented.  All Children gained 1st class Diplomas in the recent cycling tests.

Mr D Clark of the permanent emergency staff was thanked for his service during the past term. 

Miss C E Sanders was given a small gift of money from the staff and 1C class, in order to purchase something useful for college.  She is entering the Charlotte Mason Training College at Ambleside.  This is a private college, but is recognised by the Ministry of Education.

School closed at 4pm for the Summer holiday.

Neil Whitney sent to W’boro’ Victoria School to take the alternative A S E qualifying test.  He was absent on Nov 12th, as was Christine smith.  Her parents did not want her to sit.
