Report on Inspection on May 26th, 27th and 28th May last, received.
Children enter this school at the age of 7 years, the majority from the adjoining County Infants School. A number of boys and girls go at the age of 11 to secondary Grammar Schools in Wellingborough. * Pupils not transferred in this way used formerly to remain here until they left school. Since September 1949 they have been transferred at 13 years of age to the Secondary Modern Schools of Rushden. It is intended eventually when there is sufficient accommodation in the Secondary modern Schools to complete reorganisation, and this will then become a Primary School with an age range of 7 to 11 years. In the meantime senior pupils will continue to receive the first two years of their secondary education at this school.
They attend the Secondary Modern School for instruction in housecraft and Handicraft. Of the total roll of 316 at the time of this inspection, 81 pupils were of secondary age. These boys and girls comprise the two Senior classes. The 235 Junior children are organised in six classes.
The Headmaster has given long service to the local Education Authority and has been Headmaster at this school since 1935, He has been Principal of the Rushden Evening Institute since 1938. His long association with Rushden, his experience and ability as a teacher are of great value to his school. There are eight assistants, all of them qualified except for the three Mistresses on the staff. They compose with the Headmaster an effective team of more than average teaching ability.
Though old, the premises are maintained in good order. They contain 7 classrooms and a hall; one of the senior forms is accommodated in the hall. The boys’ and girls’ cloakrooms are provided with good wash basins to which hot water is piped. More could be made of this provision if soap and towels were more generously provided. There is a staff room and redecoration and furnishing of this might well form part of an Art and Needlework project for the older pupils. Girls change for Physical Education in a room on the first floor of the building used chiefly as a store room; a disused Handicraft room across the playground serves as a changing room for the boys.
Some 30 children regularly take the School Meals at Portland Road Central Kitchen.
The general achievement at the junior stage is very good. Number is very soundly taught and most of the children read and write well. They are keenly interested in their Religious Instruction, Nature Study, History and Geography and enjoy their Singing, Physical Education and Games. Use of the hall as a form room and the smallness of most of the other rooms make freedom of movement difficult, but against this restriction can be offset the vitality and thoroughness of the teaching. Nevertheless consideration might now be given to contriving within the limits of timetable and premises the inclusion of such activities as Country dancing, Music and Movement and work with a percussion band. A broadening of the course in Art and Crafts is especially desirable. One of the junior classes serves as a Reserve Group for a number of backward children; at present it is not possible to restrict the class to these children and there is a wide range of ability to be dealt with. The Master in charge of this class has undertaken this work only recently and is still experimenting with methods and organisation; possible developments were discussed fully during the inspection.
Despite its limited resources the school does what it can and that not unsuccessfully to provide a broad and satisfactory two year course of study at the secondary stage. The sound work already described in the junior classes is continued. The pupils show themselves particularly competent in Arithmetic and it is unfortunate that the girls are not able to share the wider Mathematics course enjoyed by the boys. The pupils are encouraged to read widely and make use of a variety of school reading books, the County Library and the local Public Library. There written English is satisfactory and would gain in interest and vitality if it were less controlled. History and Geography are well handled. Only the girls have Singing lessons, but boys and girls are keenly interested in the BBC series “Adventures in Music”. Suitable Science courses have been planned for the boys and girls, though much of the work has to be in the form of demonstration by the Master responsible. Some of the Art is promising, particularly the pattern work and sketches from observation. The crafts are, however, restricted to lettering for the boys and needlework for the girls. The high standards expected in the neatness and set-out of the work in all subjects is particularly to be commended. There is plenty of vigour in the Physical Education; for their games these pupils have the use of a nearby sports ground and during the inspection some very careful cricket coaching was seen in progress. Most of the boys and girls change for their games and Physical education periods.
This is a well-run school. The high quality of achievement generally in the “class subjects” should now encourage a greater development in other branches of the curriculum notably in Art, Craft and Music. The condition of the school is good and the future is promising, especially with the additional accommodation available when the final transfer of the senior pupils will have taken place. The friendliness, good manners, bearing and appearance of the pupils are particularly pleasing.
