A Film Unit of the Ministry of Information visited the school this morning and showed three educational films.

Brig. Gen Frost spoke to the senior children this am on his experiences in India particularly on the religious side.

A very small outbreak of fire occurred between top of air raid shelter and roof of boys’ shed.  Caretaker attempted to extinguish but was unable to do so, so he notified the Fire Brigade who completed the job in 2 or 3 minutes.  No reason for outbreak – smouldering sandbags has been found.

15 Apr

A slight accident occurred during recreation period this afternoon to tony Linnell, who collided with another boy with result he banged his head against the rain pipe.  The wound was bathed and Head teacher felt doctor’s attention was needed – a stitch to be put in.  Mr Dodge took the lad to a doctor, but doctor was not in.  The lad was thereupon taken home and a visit to the doctor’s surgery in the morning was advised.  Mother took child to doctor.

Many children availed themselves of the privilege of attending St Mary’s Church this morning for Ascension Day service.  All returned to school by 9.40am.

A party of senior scholars accompanied by the Head teacher, Mr Bates and Mrs Edge were taken to London today.  They were conducted round the Houses of parliament by the local MP Ald G S Lindgren.  Other places visited were St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar square, Whitehall and Buckingham Palace.  The visit conclude with a river trip from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge and along the course particular points of interest were pointed out to the scholars.

An accident occurred at approx. 3.50pm on Mon July 12th in Junior 2 room during Needlework lesson to Sonia Hyde who in putting the needle through material accidentally pricked her eye.  Miss Winter, teacher, examined the girl but detected no injury.  I knew nothing of the occurrence until next morning at about 9.15am when checking up absentees I noted the girl was absent and enquired the reason.  I immediately approached Miss Winter who then detailed the happenings to me.  The appropriate form (M J 26) giving particulars was completed and forwarded to the Office this pm.

Rev R E Bayes who commenced at this school the day it was opened and left 50 years ago this week visited the school and spoke to Senior 3 and 4 mainly on conditions in USA where he has resided for the past 30 years.

Many scholars availed themselves of the privilege of attending Ascension Day service at St Mary’s Church at 9am.  They all returned to school after the service.

22 May

Roger Allen tripped up in the playground.  His arm was examined but nothing serious was found.  Lad was advised to go to the Doctor if need be.  An X ray was taken and small chipping of elbow was found.

23 May

It was reported that Janet Sayer, on her way from Sports ground about 4.35pm – Miss Ruff and Mr Atkins in charge – yesterday swung on some railings, fell and broke her arm.  A Doctor was sent for and attended to the girl, who was taken to hospital.  Mrs Sayer called this am to thank teachers for kind attention to the girl.

Keith Frankham fell during High Jump practice at 11.45am – Mr Cleaver in charge – took the lad to a Doctor who advised an X ray for which the mother took the lad this pm.

22 children referred to under May 16th date – one boy did not wish to attend – attended Grammar Schools at Wellingboro’ this am.

Empire Day celebrated today.  Commenced with service at which Earl of Gowrie’s message was read.

16 boys attended W’boro’ Technical institute today – exam for admission to Junior Technical School.  6 pupils – “borderline” cases attended at W’boro’ for further test – A S E.

The following children, as a result of A S E have been recommended for transfer to a secondary School;- Jacqueline Austin, Gillian Claridge, Christine Colson, Audrey Dodd, Jean Rowthorn, Mary Robson, Chris Dickens, David Nichols, Ray Byford, John Nunley, Peter Walker, Peter Trott.

David Austin offered transfer to W’boro’ Grammar School.  Anthony Linnell and George Ord passed entrance exam to W’boro Technical School.

27 Jul

School closed this afternoon for the Summer holidays.  39 pupils transferred to Modern Secondary Schools, 7 to Junior Technical Schools and 13 to Grammar Schools.

Mr W G Dodge ceased duty.  A presentation was made to Mr Dodge who has been on the staff since 1913, by Mr W E Capon, Chairman of Managers, on behalf of the staff, old scholars and scholars.
