Strangers Detained After Exciting Chase

Bowling Pavilion Entered

Smart police work of the “Flying Squad” type resulted in the rapid arrest of two men near Rushden on Thursday morning.

A car, a motor-cycle and pedal cycles were brought into use for a half-hour chase, which followed a telephone call to the Rushden Police informing them that two men, suspected of having broken into the Town Bowling Club’s pavilion in Kimbolton-road, Rushden, had been seen in fields near by.

Inspector Knight despatched P.C.’s Wild and Harris on a motor-cycle, police from Wellingborough operated in a car, and the Inspector and P.C. Lawman, of Higham Ferrers, set off on cycles.

The pursuit began at 9.40 and within half an hour the two constables on the motor cycle had detained two strangers in a field off the main Rushden Wellingborough-road, near Tunnell’s Hill. The strangers were taken to Rushden Police Station, to await appearance at Wellingborough. It is stated that goods believed to have been stolen have been recovered.

Enquiries at the Town Bowling Club’s premises show that the pavilion was broken into during the night, and that cigarettes, liquid refreshment, a pair of boots and other goods were removed. “Nenehurst”, the large house, formerly in the occupation of Mr. J. White, was also visited.
