Mill House, Raunds

Raunds tower mill was built on the site of a ‘post-mill’ which appears on the 1798 enclosure map of the parish. The date of the building of the tower mill is unknown. An inscription datestone was destroyed when the tower’s remains were demolished.

The sails were taken down in 1912. Other parts of the structure were removed in the 1920’s and the remains were reduced to a height of 20 feet by the then owner William James Spreadbury who resided and farmed the property with his wife Dorothy and son George. William died in 1957 and his son took over the farm and resided at ‘Mill House’ with his wife Alice and daughters Julie and Susan. George died in January 1962.

‘Mill House’ was sold later in 1962 and demolished in 1964.

At the New Inn, in Thrapston, on Tuesday the 23rd day of October instant, at Four o’clock in the afternoon (unless previously disposed of by private contract), subject to such conditions of sale as will be then and there produced.

All that Messuage or dwelling-house and Windmill, with the Barns, Stable, Yard, Garden, Orchard, and Two Paddocks thereto adjoining and belonging, situate and being in Raunds aforesaid containing by estimation three roods or thereabouts, and no or late in the occupation of Mr. James Pentelow.

And also all that Close of Pasture Land, adjoining in part to the before-mentioned premises, and containing by estimation three roods or thereabouts.

Joins the Australian Contingent

Mr. Ralph Pentelow, eldest son of the late Mr. James Pentelow, and Mrs. Pentelow, of Raunds Mill, who went out to Australia some time ago, has joined the Australian contingent and is now at the front.
