The Local Preachers
Besides their sermons Local Preachers of sixty years ago required string and spare candles in their pockets when they set out for a village appointment. The string was for harness adjustments and the candles for replenishing the lanterns. Such was the testimony of those who travelled with Brothers J. Burt, S. Pack, John Parker, Owen Beaumont and Thomas Patenall. An old Plan recalled these days of the Gospel Chariot by the Office of "Local Preachers Horse Hire Secretary," but in 1920 this was the joint responsibility of the Circuit Stewards and within a couple of years the horse had been completely superseded by the petrol engine. The first Local Preachers' quarterly Meeting on the new premises under the chairmanship of Rev. J. W. Eacott in September 1903 was attended by Bros. E. Miller, G. Miller, Michell, Bozeat, Burt, Furniss, Pack, Crouch, Freeman, Driver, K. Wooding, B. Wooding, Parker, Harris, T. Patenall, W. Langley, Cross and J. W. Cure, the secretary. A plan of 1918 bears the names of Local Preachers resident in Higham Ferrers J. Parker, J. Burt, J. Pack, T. Freeman, J. Hartwell and H. Dickeson, with a reminder in the Special Announcements that "wherever possible Open Air Services should be held on Sunday before or after the usual evening services in our chapels ".
The fifteen years following seem to have recruited no new brethren from Higham Ferrers, although in 1934 the names of Bros. E. E. Wood, S. Woods and S. Daniels appear with Mr. Goosey serving as Auxiliary. By 1940 Bro. Owen Beaumont had moved from Hargrave renewing his activities with the Methodists at Higham Ferrers. Also Bro. A. Meanwell's name appeared and there was evidence of a strong Mission Band at this time. Sister E. Miller came to Caldecott and Bro. J. Horne was placed on full plan in 1947. Bro. E. S. Tanner, while fulfilling appointments himself has also encouraged and trained several younger men from the Circuit including C. Garley and D. Hudson from Higham Ferrers. From a current Plan, Bro. J. W. Gilks serves as a Helper, whilst M. King-Underwood and D. Wicks are "on Trial" with J. Ingyon "on Note".
