War Monument For Rushden
Progress With The Scheme - Some Details of the Design

A meeting of the general committee of the War Monument Fund for Rushden was held on Tuesday evening at the Waverley Hotel, Mr. Fred Knight, J.P., presiding.

The Executive Committee presented a report, detailing the full scheme recommended by Mr. J. A. Gotch, architect, of Kettering.

The General Committee gave the Executive Committee full power to proceed with the scheme at once.

The secretary (Mr. A. F. Weale) reported that the appeal for funds had met with great success.  They were still hoping for further subscriptions, so that the full scheme could be carried out in due course.

We understand that the monument will be of Weldon stone.  The Rushden Urban Council having given permission for the monument to be placed in the centre of the Green, this will be done.  The monument, which will be about 34 ft. in height, will be octagonal in shape, and the eight panels will contain the names of over 400 Rushden men who made the supreme sacrifice during the war.  Symbolic figures by a noted sculptor will be outstanding feature of the architect’s design.

It is not thought necessary at the present time that the monument should be enclosed in railings, as, in view of the sacred nature of the work, it is believed that the public will refrain from damaging the monument.
