Street Memorial WWI
Station Road, Wentworth-road, and Carnegie-street

Rushden Echo, 8th February 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins

Rushden’s Soldier Sons — The Station Road District
No Roll of Honour, but not Forgotten

Though there is no Roll of Honour fixed up in Station-road yet, the lads on active service are not forgotten, and Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Dartnell have kindly collected for the boys from Station-road, Wentworth-road, and Carnegie-street. To each of the 24 boys on the list which they prepared, the sum of 3s. 6d. has been sent, and two names have since been added. Among the letters from the recipients are the following:-

Pte. Bert Bond, Essex Regt.: Your nice Christmas greetings gave me a big surprise. I join with you all in wishing that peace may come to our land, and that quickly. God speed the time when we all may find that war is a thing of the past and that Christmas really brings peace and goodwill to men.

Pte. Ernest Leeding, Suffolk Regt.: I cannot say when this terrible war will be over, but earnestly hope it may be brought to a speedy end and that peace may reign once again.

W. Peck (France): I appreciate beyond words what is being done by friends at home. I hope with you that we may soon have a conclusive peace.

T. A. Knighton: All the boys are looking forward to getting back to dear old Rushden once more.

Able Seaman H. Harrison: I do hope this terrible war will soon end and that we shall all have the pleasure of spending a happy Christmas at home another year.

E. Berridge (France): We know you all are looking forward to the time when peace once more is in our land. The lads are looking forward for that time, too, when they can once more put their feet under their mother’s table. I fear it will be very sad for so many who have lost some of their dear ones. I spent my Christmas in the line—I cannot say in the trenches for that would be wrong, as it is nothing but shell holes. I am thankful to say we are now just behind the line again. Everywhere is now white with snow, and it looks real Christmas weather now.

Pte. L. Denton: I often think of you all when we are in the trenches, and often wish I was in Rushden, but we must be content to look forward to a brighter Christmas next year.

Other letters of thanks have been received from Pte. Bernard Penn, Ernest Garley, A.B. W. Waller, R.N.D., James Gross, Pte. H. Freeman, C. Smith, and all of them endorse the wish forwarded with Christmas gift for an early end and conclusive peace.
