Closing Stages of Spitfire Campaign
Popular Model Exhibition and a Big Bedroom suite Cheque

Kittens Help Too

Though nearing the closing stage, the “Evening Telegraph” Spitfire Fund continues to hold the limelight, and the Rushden and Higham Ferrers effort has had some particularly pleasing items to show during the last few days.

Everybody has appreciated the special contribution of Mr. W. Gore, who raised more than £20 by exhibiting his wonderful model fair at Rushden’s old post office. Some thousands of visitors passed through the exhibition, and all paid tribute to Mr. Gore’s craftsmanship, patience and powers of observation. Mr. B. W. Benford, of Higham Ferrers, gave valuable assistance as personal steward, and members of the Rushden Adult School were in attendance at the doors.

Jillian Caswell, aged not quite two, had an important part to play in a little ceremony at our office on Monday afternoon, and with obvious delight she handed a cheque for £102 11s. made out to the Spitfire Fund, to Alderman Frank Walker, J.P., Mayor of Higham Ferrers.

Jill’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Caswell, of Wellingborough-road, Rushden, had worked with intense enthusiasm to raise this fine sum after announcing that they would give one of the best Jacobean bedroom suites from their furniture showrooms. The suite became the prize in a competition, and by this means the value of the gift was more than doubled.

Alderman Walker took part in the final stage of the competition and declared the winner to be Mrs. Kilsby, of 18 Morley-street, Kettering, who will thus receive a prise worth more than £40.

The Mayor of Higham congratulated Mrs. Caswell on the generosity and zeal that she and her husband have displayed, and in genial manner he thanked the bright little “donor” of the big cheque.

A litter of kittens has also been doing its best to help the fund. It was sent to our office by Mrs. Ward, of 39 Spencer-road, Rushden, and the advance guard, consisting of a pretty grey and lively black, patrolled the window, inviting bids from the passing kitten lovers. The grey was soon sold for five shillings.

It is expected that the fund launched by the “Evening Telegraph” and developed by the co-operation of the Rushden and Higham Ferrers Spitfire Committee and similar bodies in other towns will reach £30,000 and thus pay for the building of six fighter ‘planes. The Rushden and Higham contribution is now far in advance of £7,000.
