Rushden’s Casualty List - Victims of the War
Pte. Charles Wheeler, South Staffordshire Regiment, aged 20, adopted son of Mrs C. Evans, of 73, Duck-street, Rushden, is officially reported as having been killed in action in France on September 29th. The deceased soldier was wounded in October last year and came to England, returning to the Western front last May. Prior to joining the Colours in February last year, he was a member of the Rushden Company, 2nd Battalion Northants Volunteer Regiment, and was employed by Messrs. W. Sargent and Co., boot manufacturers, Rushden. |

Rushden Volunteer Killed
Mrs. C. Evans, of 73, Duck-street, Rushden, received official news on Monday morning that her adopted and only son, Pte. Charles Wheeler, of the South Staffordshire Regt., was killed in action on Sept. 29th in France. Pte. Wheeler, who was 20 years of age, enlisted in February, 1917, and went to France in the following September. In October he was wounded in his right arm and came to England, returning to France in May this year. Previous to joining up he was employed by Messrs. W. Sargent and Co., boot manufacturers, Rushden, and was a member of the Rushden Volunteers.
