On Service In Four Wars - Rushden Sailor Killed In Action

Leading Seaman Peter Wheeldon, RN. elder son of Mrs E Burton of 78 Westfield Avenue, Rushden, has been officially reported killed in action, in a telegram received on Thursday week.

L/S Wheeldon was 34 years of age, and had been in the Navy for 21 years. He was born in Leeds and at the age of 12 entered a Naval training school, afterwards serving in four wars, including the Abysinia and Spanish Wars. For four years before the present war he was at Gibraltar. Finishing his service in July 1939, he rejoined the Navy when War broke out.

His younger brother is serving in the Fleet Air Arm and three sisters are also left - one each at Finedon, Rushden and Stanwick.
