Soldier Missing

A letter which arrived on Friday from the records office of the Royal Artillery informed Mrs. Laura Valentine, of 71, Harborough-road, Rushden, that her husband, Lance-Bombardier Walter Valentine (23), had been posted as missing pending further information. He was stationed in Malaya.

Lance-Bmdr. Valentine, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Valentine, of Washbrook-road, Rushden, used to attend the Rushden Mission Church and played in the Mission Band. He formerly worked for Messrs. Yorke Bros. Ltd., of Wellingborough, boot manufacturers. There is one daughter, Judith, aged two.

Rushden Bombardier A War Prisoner

Mrs. Laura Valentine, of 71, Harborough-road, Rushden, was informed by the Records Office of the Royal Artillery on Thursday that her husband, L/Bombardier Walter Valentine, is a prisoner of was in Japanese hands and interned at Tai Camp. This was the first information Mrs. Valentine had received since he was posted as missing in March, 1942, when he was stationed in Malaya.

L/Bdr Valentine, who is 24, is the fifth son of Mrs. and the late Mr. S. A. Valentine, of Washbrook-road, Rushden, and used to attend the Rushden Mission Church, playing in the Mission Band. He formerly worked for Messrs. Yorke Bros. Ltd. of Wellingborough, boot manufacturers. Three brothers are serving with the R.A.F. and two are on War work. There is one young daughter.

Reported Missing

Mrs. Valentine, of 26, Washbrook-road, Rushden, received news on Saturday of an official report from the Japanese Government, stating that her son, Bombardier Walter Reuben Valentine, was among those missing following the sinking of a Japanese transport which was conveying prisoners of war from Thailand to Japan. The message added: The date of the sinking is not stated, but it is thought to have occurred in the Autumn of 1944. Urgent inquiry in the matter has been made of the Tokio authorities. Until further information is received or a decision is reached concerning his fate he will be recorded as “missing at sea”.

Bdr. Valentine (27) is the fifth son of Mrs. And the late Mr. S. Valentine, and has a wife and daughter. He went to the Far East about 18 months before the fall of Singapore. Before service he was employed by Messrs. Yorke Bros. Ltd., Wellingborough, and was a member of the Rushden Mission Band. Three brothers are in the R.A.F. and have all served in the Middle East or Central Mediterranean.
