Rushden Soldier Killed - Pte WG Underwood of the Canadian Contingent

Mrs Wm Henry Goodfellow, of 88 High-street-south, Rushden, has, we regret to report, received news that her brother, Pte Walter George Underwood, of the Canadian Contingent, was killed in action on the Western front on November 18th. The late Pte Underwood, who was 40 years of age, was a native of Rushden, and prior to leaving for Canada four years ago, was employed by Messrs. Nurrish and Pallett, boot manufacturers, Rushden. He leaves a widow and four children to mourn their loss.

When he resided in Rushden, he was well known, as a footballer, and was a member of the Windmill Club. After arriving in Canada he continued at his trade of shoemaker.

The late Pte Underwood's eldest brother, Pte Joseph Underwood, also a native of Rushden and of the Canadian Contingent, has received his discharge from the army, having bom legs crushed on the Western front during August this year. He came to England during convalescence, but was not afforded an opportunity of visiting his native town. He left for Canada where he had left a wife and three children, about the beginning of November and arrived there five days before his brother was killed.

One other brother, Pte Robert Underwood, of the Australian Contingent, is at present in training in Australia.

All three of the above mentioned soldiers are the sons of the late Mr Mark Underwood, who resided in Wellingborough-road, and who passed away last year.
