Rushden Lad Killed - At the Age of Seventeen
The Late Private W. Smith

We regret to announce the death of Pte W. B. Smith, --- Suffolk Regiment, son of the late Mr. Porter B. Smith, hairdresser, Wellingborough-road, Rushden, and of Mrs Smith, of Emneth, near Wisbech. Pte W. Smith, who was killed by a shell in France on July 19th, was only 17 years of age. He would have celebrated his 18th birthday, had he lived, in September next. He was a youth of very soldierly bearing, and promised to have a successful career in the Army. Mrs. Smith received the sad news of her son’s death from the Chaplain, who took great interest in him.
