Local Journalist - Rushden Airman Killed in Egypt

The sad news was received by wire on Wednesday last week that Second-Lieutenant V. S. Smith, Royal Flying Corps, was killed in action in Egypt on the Saturday previous. The gallant officer was the only brother of Mrs. E. B. Percival, of the Electricity Works House, Rushden. He went out in April last with the R.F.A., and was subsequently transferred to the Flying corps as an observer. Lieut. Smith, who was only 19 years of age, was a son of the late Mr. Sidney Smith, a well-known Peterborough journalist, who died in February of last year, and, like his father, had also entered the journalistic profession. His death at such an early age cuts short a career of much promise, and the deepest sympathy has been extended to his two sisters, Mrs. Percival and Miss Jessie Smith.
