Rumour - Regarding Private M Smith - Quite Untrue
We are asked to contradict a rumour that has been freely circulated round the town that Pte M Smith, of the Northants Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs C Smith, of 39 North-street, Rushden, had been killed in action.
Happily the rumour is entirely without foundation as Mr and Mrs Smith have received letters from their son, dated April 13 and 16, respectively, in which he says he is quite well, and uninjured.

Rushden Brothers Victim - Mr and Mrs C Smith Lose their Second Son - Private Monty Smith
It is with deep regret that we have to report that Mr and Mrs C Smith, of 39, North-street, Rushden, have received official news of the death in action of their son, Pte Monty Smith, of the Northants Regiment The first news, which is made more acute by the fact that this it the second son of Mrs and Mrs Smith killed in action, was contained in a letter which Mr and Mrs Hall of Duck-street, Rushden, have received from their son, Pte Hall, of the Northants Regiment.
The fact is also mentioned by two other Rushden soldiers writing home. Pte Hall's letter is dated July 11th. Official news of Pte Smith's death was received yesterday, with the sympathy of the King and Queen. He was killed on July 8th.
Pte Monty Smith, who enlisted in September, 1914, and went out to France, in the following December, was invalided home in January, 1915, with frostbitten feet. He soon recovered, however, and went out to France again, being wounded on August 30th, 1915. He again went out to France, on March 1st of this year, and has been fairly fortunate up to the recent British advance.
Besides the brother, Pte Yalden Smith (21 years of age) who was killed some months ago, Pte Monty Smith had another brother, Pte Archy Smith, -- East Surreys, who is expecting to go out to France for the first time and has just been home on leave. Pte Archy Smith is 27 years of age, and Pte M Smith was 20 years old. Pte M Smith formerly worked at Mr Hector's currying factory, Higham Ferrers.
