Rushden Soldier Killed - Private W Sherwood of the 7th Northants - Letter from Capt Mobbs

We sincerely regret to report that Mr and Mrs F Sherwood, of 8a Albion-place, Rushden, have received unofficial news that their son, Pte W Sherwood, of the 7th Northants Regt, was killed in action on Sunday, Nov. 14th.

The sad news is sent by Capt Edgar R Mobbs, who is in command of the deceased soldier's company, so it may be taken as true.

Furthermore, Pte Frank Smith, son of Mr and Mrs Smith, of High-street, Rushden, has written to his parents confirming the news contained in Capt Mobbs's letter and added the information that he saw Pte Sherwood buried in a cemetery near where he fell.

Capt Mobbs write under date Nov 14, as follows: "I am sorry to have to tell you that your son, Pte William Sherwood, was killed in action this morning. I know what a blow it will be to you, and I am so sorry for you. He was shot a 7.30 this morning, and was brought down to the dressing station behind our lines, and was at once seen by a doctor. I myself went to see him about 9.30, and he died quite quietly whilst I was there. I have had all his things collected and sent to you, and have arranged to have him buried tomorrow morning. We were making a cross this afternoon, and I have arranged for a parson to come and bury him. It must help you to think he died doing his duty for his King and Country."

The late Pte Sherwood only enlisted during midsummer this year, and he had been at the front about five weeks when he met his death. Prior to leaving Rushden he worked at Messrs. Fred Knight and Sons. He was 20 years of age, and would have celebrated his 21st birthday on Dec 12th.

Two of the deceased soldier's brothers are serving in His Majesty's forces - Pte J Sherwood and Pte B Sherwood of the 7th Battalion, who is also in the County Regiment and who expects to leave for the front shortly.
