Rushden's Casualty List

News has been received by Mrs E Roberts, of 57 Grove-street, that her youngest son, Seaman-Gunner R W Roberts, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, of the S.S.—, was drowned on April 21st. Official news of his having lost his life was received on April 27th. Seaman-Gunner Roberts attested in December 1915, and was transferred to the R.N.V.R. in June 1916. He was a well-known footballer, having played for St Mary's and Rushden Church Lads as a junior, and later for Rushden Fosse Football Club, and he was also a member of the Rushden Rifle Band, besides being an old member of the Church Lads' Brigade. He was also a runner, having won numerous prizes in the county. Seaman-Gunner Roberts had served on board S.S.— for over twelve months. Previous to joining up he was a member of the V.T.C., and also of the St Mary's Bible Class. Mrs Roberts and family wish to thank their friends for the kindness towards them in their bereavement.

Rushden Seaman Drowned

Mrs Elizabeth Roberts, of Grove-street, Rushden, has received news that her son, Able Seaman Ronald William Roberts, R.N.V.R., has been drowned at sea. The vessel on which he was serving was torpedoed, and the seaman was seen to jump into the sea, but he was not among the survivors landed. He had been in the Naval Reserve for two years, and had been at sea on active service over 12 months. Previous to joining up he worked at Messrs. Cunnington Bros., Rushden.
