Rushden Fusilier's Fate - Unofficially Reported Killed - Private Eli Payne
Unofficial news has been received this week to the effect that Pte Eli Payne, 40750, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, whose wife resides at 35, Victoria-road, Rushden, was killed in action on April 1st. Pte Harry Webb, of Raunds, has written to say that he saw Pte Eli Payne killed by a shell, and up to the time of writing no other news has been received. For this reason Pte Payne's relatives and friends still keep up a little hope, and any of our readers with any further information are asked to communicate either with us or with Mrs Payne.
Pte Eli Payne enlisted on November 16th last year, and after less than thee months' training went out to France (at the end of January this year). He was 29 years of age.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE for the late Pte Eli Payne, son of Mr and Mrs Payne of Victoria-road, Rushden, was held in West-street on Sunday evening, and was conducted by the Rector (Rev P Robson). Addresses were given by the Rev P J Richards (Vicar of St Peter's) and the Rev C J Keeler (Independent Wesleyan minister). Sullivan's beautiful hymn, "The homeland" was sung as a quartette [sic] by Miss Groom, Mrs Corbett, Mr F Stringer and Mr W Howes. Special hymns were sung viz., "Nearer my God to Thee", "Holy Father in Thy Mercy" and "O God, our help in ages past." There was a large congregation.
