Rushden's Soldier Sons - Hayway and Spencer Road District - Another Winter's Warfare?

Mrs Ward and Mrs Richardson, treasurer and secretary of the Hayway and Spencer-road Roll of Honour at Rushden, have received many letters of thanks from the recipients of gifts from the war shrine. The following are extracts from the letter: FJ Pashler, R.A.M.C: We soldiers like a smoke, as it cheers us up and makes us think of home.

THE DEATH took place rather suddenly at Duston Hospital, Northampton, on Monday morning of Pte F Pashler, R.A.M.C., of Spencer-road, Rushden. He came home a fortnight ago on sick leave, having narrowly escaped dysentery. On arriving home he became worse, and after medical attention, was sent to Duston Hospital yesterday week. His wife had a letter from him on Sunday to the effect that he was improving, but on Monday morning she received a telegram stating that her husband was dead. Pte Pashler was connected with the Rushden St. John Ambulance Brigade for 17 years, for which a long-service medal has been recommended. He joined the Army 3½ years ago.

MILITARY FUNERAL - The funeral took place on Saturday at Rushden cemetery of Pte F Pashler, R.A.M.C., the body having been brought to Rushden the previous evening. The following members of the Rushden St. John Ambulance Brigade attended the funeral: First-Class Sergt. Prigmore (in charge), Sergt Abbott, Cpl Page, Ptes O'Connor, Partridge, and Abblett, and Bugler Robinson. The Rector (Rev. P E Robson) officiated. The coffin, covered with the Union Jack, was carried shoulder high by Sergts Prigmore and Abbott, and Ptes O'Connor and Partridge. Bugler Robinson sounded the "Last Post". Mrs Pashler, the widow, was unable to attend, owing to illness. The breastplate on the coffin bore the inscription "Pte F Pashler, R.A.M.C., Died 25th November, 1918, aged 46 years." Mr T Swindall was the undertaker.

DOUBLE BEREAVEMENT - Much sympathy has been expressed with Mrs Pashler, of Spencer-road, widow of Pte F Pashler, in the loss of her elder son, Cyril, aged 14, on Sunday from septic pneumonia. He had been ill only a week. He took to his bed the day before his father died (at Duston Hospital) and died the day following his father's funeral. He had started to work at Messrs. Sanders and Sanders. The younger son has also been ill with influenza, but with better prospect of recovering. Mrs Pashler having so much illness in the house, was herself practically stricken down for several days.
