Rushden Sailor is Presumed Killed - Arduous Service in the Mediterranean
News that her only son, Steward Leslie Harry Partridge, R.N., is missing, presumed killed when his ship was sunk in the Mediterranean off the North African coast, has reached Mrs M A Partridge, of 2, Albion-place, Rushden.
Steward Partridge, whose father Mr H J Partridge, died suddenly in April 1941, volunteered for service in the Royal Navy in February 1941, and was called up in the following November. He took part in the Malta convoy in June of last year, when he and other members of the ship's crew nearly lost their lives. He had another adventure when his ship was caught in a gale off Northern Ireland in October, and ten members of the crew were washed overboard.
Aged 20, Steward Partridge was a native of Rushden, being educated at the South End School. He was employed in the lasting department of Messrs B Ladds Ltd, Moor-road, and was a member of the Park-road Baptist Church and the Health and Strength League. He was also a keen footballer, having played for several local teams.
