Rushden Soldier Killed - Pte M J Packwood - 'A Brave Man, Always Cheerful'

Mrs Packwood, of 20 Roberts-street, Rushden, has received official news of the death in action of her husband, Pte M J Packwood, 17918, -- Northants Regt, on Oct. 23rd. In a letter to the widow, Sec. Lieut H Essame, the officer in charge of the Lewis Gun Section to which the deceased belonged says that Pte Packwood was firing his gun to support an attack which the British were making on the left, when he was shot in the head, and death was instantaneous. The officer expressed the sympathy of the regiment and himself, and paid a tribute to deceased's character, saying he was "a brave man, always cheerful, and always ready to help a friend no matter what the risk, and he was most efficient in the discharge of his duties."
