Andre Nicol

Andre was born on 29th August 1899, and he joined South End School on 17th March 1914. He was under the care of Mrs Fountain of 42 Griffith Street (mother of Mabel and Milicent, two of the school teachers). Andre left school on 15th July 1914, one month before his 15th birthday. He had also joined the Rushden Boy Scouts. Mr Preston, the scoutmaster, took a photograph which appears in a Rushden Argus article on 12th June 1914, when five of the scouts, including Andre Nicol, went on a trek. Mr Preston continued as scoutmaster on his return from war service, and he drew up an impressive Scouts Roll of Honour on which Andre's name is inscribed as 'killed in action'. Nothing more is known of Andre.
Note: Possibly 44651 of 136th MGC (Infantry) killed in action 16th April 1917? If so he enlisted under age. Commemorated on the Basra Memorial Panel 41, and parents given as the late Mr & Mrs W Nicoll. If you can help in any way, please contact us.
