Flight Sergeant Keith Harry Margetts

Keith Harry Margetts, eldest son of William Harry Leonard Margetts, commercial clerk and leather sorter with Harris Bros Tannery and his wife May, of 1 Tennyson Road, Rushden.

Educated at Alfred Street Junior School and Intermediate School, Rushden and was afterwards employed by William Green & Son, Boot Manufacturers, Rushden as a Costing Clerk.

A keen swimmer, he gained his Royal Life Saving Society medal in October 1940.

A member of the Home Guard and the Air Training Corps. He attended Park Road Baptist Church and was a member of the Bible Class.

In a letter dated 25th, March, 1944 from Group Captain R. Haynes commanding 626 Squadron, RAF Station, Wickenby, Lincoln: The final paragraph reads - 'Although Sergeant Margetts had not been with us very long, he had made many friends and was very popular on the Squadron. Personally, I had the utmost confidence in him for he had proved himself to be courageous and able. All officers and men of the Squadron join me in offering you our heartfelt sympathies in your great anxiety'.

From the Air Ministry, 31st, March, 1944:-

I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Sergeant Keith Harry Margetts, Royal Air Force, is missing, as a result of air operations on the night of 24/25th, March, 1944, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as Captain set out to bomb Berlin and was not heard from again'.

'The Air Council desire me to convey to you their sympathy in your present anxiety'.

Mr & Mrs Margetts were subjected to a very distressing period of time from March until November, before the loss of their son was officially confirmed.

In a letter dated 20th, November, 1944 and signed by Lady Ampthill from the British Red Cross Society and Order of St John of Jerusalem (wounded, missing and relatives department) Sgt Margetts father was informed that:-

'Temporary Flight Sergeant K. H. Margetts, No. 1576746, has been posted Missing, believed killed in Action and we should like to offer you the deep sympathy of all in the Department, we are told that on the 24th, March, 1944, your son, Flying Officer Shortliffe, Sergeant Brooker, Sergeant Chandler and Sergeant Bateman lost their lives.

From official German information via the International Red Cross Committee: 'Sergeant Margetts lost his life as a result of the air operations on the night of 24/25th, March, 1944.

On the 29th, December, 1944, the Air Ministry (Casualty Branch), presumed for official purposes that F/Sgt Margetts lost his life on the 24th, March, 1944.

Official letter from Buckingham Palace to Mr. W. H. L. Margetts:-

The Queen and I offer you our heartfelt sympathy in your great sorrow. We pray that your country's gratitude for a life so nobly given in its service, may bring you some measure of consolation'. George R.I.

March 1951 Sergeant Margetts' mother forwarded his flying log book to assists in computing his entitlement to the appropriate medals, which after assessment were duly despatched to his family, being the 1939-45 Star. The Air Crew Europe Star and the War Medal, accompanied by the appropriate statement from the Under Secretary of State for War.

Died On Berlin Raid - Rushden Pilot of R.A.F. Bomber

Flight Sergt. Keith Harry Margetts, R.A.F., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. L. Margetts, of 1 Tennyson-road, Rushden, pilot of a Lancaster bomber missing from air operations over Berlin in March is now officially reported to have lost his life on that operation.

Flight Sergt. Margetts was 21 years of age.  He joined the R.A.F. in October, 1941, and received part of his training in America.  Formerly he had been employed on the office staff of Messrs. Wm. Green and Son Ltd.  He was educated at the Intermediate School, belonged to Rushden Swimming Club and went through the Park-road Baptist Sunday School and Bible Class.
