Rushden’s Casualty List - Victims of the War
A.B. Ernest Robert Line, R.N.D., son of Mr and Mrs J. Line, of 2, Blinco-road, Rushden, is officially reported as missing from his unit since September 3rd. The missing seaman, up to the time of enlistment in August last year, was employed by Messrs Eaton and Co., boot manufacturers, Rushden. He went to France last Easter and has once been gassed. |

Rushden's Casualty List
We are able to state that there is no official confirmation of rumours concerning the supposed return of Able Seaman, Ernest Robert Line, Hawke Battalion, R.N.D., youngest son of Mrs and Mrs Line, of 2 Blinco-road Rushden. He was reported in these columns as missing on Sept. 3rd last. An official communication dated Oct. 31st was received by Mrs Line to the effect that the War Officer reported their son as having been "killed in action on Sept. 3rd, but previously reported missing on that date." The officer commanding the Hawke Batt. has written to say that A.B. Line was sent out as messenger and did not return, but his body had not been found, and it seemed probable that he was taken prisoner. The Chaplain also wrote similarly. None of his pals have written to say he was killed; and good hopes of his return are still entertained. A.B. Line joined the R.N.D. in August, 1917, and went to France last Easter.
