Rushden Soldier Missing - Pte William Knight - Northants Regt. attached to the Bedfords - News Wanted
Mr and Mrs Arthur Knight, of 65, Newton-road, Rushden, would be very grateful to anyone who can send them any further information of their son, 23525 Private William Knight, Northants Regiment, attached to the Bedfords, who was in civil life up to March 1916, and was sent out to France on July 20th. The last letter Mr and Mrs Knight received from their son was dated July 24th, and they have since been anxiously waiting for further news. On August 22nd, Mrs Knight received official news saying that Pte W Knight has been missing since July 30th. Another letter Mrs Knight received from a fellow soldier on August 24th, as follows:
"I am writing to you. I don't know whether you know or not, but I believe your son is missing. He is not with the regiment. I have made all enquiries I possibly can and can find no trace of him. He was not brought in with the wounded, so I will let you know as soon as I get any trace of him. I might say he was a pal of mine, and he was with me until the last few minutes of the engagement when I missed him all at once, but do not worry; better news might possibly follow. Trusting these few words will come true, from Pte A Stowe."
A further letter has since been sent by this same soldier, which Mrs Knight received on September 2nd, saying: "I much regret to say that your dear son has been missing since August 1st, when in the last few minutes of the engagement, we had the order to retire, which we did. I am not quite sure, but I believe he was struck by a machine gun bullet. Your son was a great friend of mine, and we used to pal together. I have enquired of almost everyone in the company, but no one knows. Any information I can get I will readily send on. Trusting your dear son will soon turn up, but be of good mind, do not worry, but if the worst is the worst your son was brave and did his duty for his country. I am, your dear son's pal, Pte A Stowe."
Pte W Knight was 22 years of age on July 31st, and has two more brothers in the Army - Driver J Knight, who is in the Royal Engineers, serving in Egypt, and Pte B Knight, who is in the Suffolk Regiment.
