Reported Killed

We regret to hear unofficial news that Pte H Knight ("Sonny") of the Northants has been killed. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Knight, of Victoria road, Rushden, who are anxious to hear of any news to allay their uncertainty of mind.

Rushden Soldier's Fate - Private H H Knight - Twice Wounded, Now Killed

We are grieved to report that Mr and Mrs Thomas Knight, of 6 Victoria road, Rushden, have received news from unofficial sources that their eldest son, Pte H H ('Sonny') Knight, of the Northants Regiment has been killed in action. The sad news is sent by comrades in letters to their relatives, but Mr and Mrs Knight will be grateful for any further particulars any of his comrades can send them.

The late Pte Knight enlisted in September, 1914, immediately after the outbreak of war, and went to France about two years ago. In September last year, he received seven shrapnel wounds in the right side, which brought him to England for eight months. Prior to that he had received slight wounds during fighting at Trones wood. At the time of his death he was 23 years of age. Before enlisting, he was employed by his uncle, Mr Jos. Knight, boot manufacturer, Rushden. He was well known locally as a footballer, and for some time was vice-captain of the Rushden Church Institute Football Club.

The late Pte Knight proved himself an expert with the rifle, obtaining a first class certificate as a marksman, which entitled him to wear the crossed guns. He received his training under the late Colonel Ripley.

Mr and Mrs Knight have another son serving his country, viz., Pte Leonard Knight, of the Buffs, who at present is stationed in India. This son, who was but 16 when he enlisted, contracted enteric fever during the Mesopotamia campaign, and was sent to hospital in India, in which country he has remained ever since.
