When Louis Knibbs signed his attestation paper on 9th December 1915 he was 18 years and 6 months old, born in Rushden, of the Wesleyan faith, working as a grocer and living at 23 Pratt Road. His medical examination found him to be 5' 9½" tall, weighing 128 pounds, with a chest of 33½" (2" expansion), and of fair physical development. He was called up on 11th May 1916 and after training was promoted to Corporal on 16th November 1916. He left Folkestone on 18th December 1916 and arrived at Etaples the following day, joining his battalion in the field on 8th January 1917. He was hospitalised from 12th April to 14th July 1917 with boils to his neck and forearm, and was then granted furlough at home until 23rd July. He returned to France and rejoined his battalion on 12th August 1917, and died on 27th May 1918 aged 20.

SOLDIER'S DEATH - Mr and Mrs Ernest Knibbs, of Melchbourne, formerly of Pratt-road, Rushden, have received an official intimation that the Army Council now presume the death of their son Corpl Lewis Knibbs, 22nd Durham Light Infantry, who was reported missing on May 27th, 1918. Deceased, who joined the Colours in 1916, was in the employ of Mr G W Batterbsy, grocer, Rushden, but prior to that he was in the Rushden Co-operative Society's grocery department, High-street. After leaving the training camp he was sent out to France, and was subsequently invalided home, returning to France on his recovery. He had not been out more than a month when the casualty occurred.
