Pioneer HarrisonRushden Soldier Dies in Gibraltar

The wife of a Rushden soldier, Pte. Arthur Harrison, aged 36, of 2, Highfield-road, has received the tragic news that her husband, who has been serving in the Military Pioneer Corps at Gibraltar, has died from injuries received in an accident. The letter was dated Jan. 1st, and stated that the death occurred on Boxing Day.

Pte. Harrison joined the Army as a drummer boy during the last war, and served several years in India. He left in 1923, and soon afterwards started work at the Tecnic boot factory, where he had worked ever since until he joined the Pioneer Corps in June. He was a keen sportsman, especially fond of football, and attended many matches in Rushden and district. His parents died several years ago; the wife is left with a little daughter.

Killed By A Bullet - Rushden Soldier’s Death at Gibraltar was Accidental

Letters from Gibraltar, where her husband, Pte. Arthur Harrison, of the A.M.P.C., was killed on Christmas night, inform Mrs. Harrison, of 2, Highfield-road, Rushden, that the incident was accidental.

Pte. Harrison was asleep when a firearm was discharged in the adjoining room, the bullet going through the wall and killing him instantaneously.

“Your husband,” writes an officer, “was held in the greatest esteem by the whole Company. He was very popular, and his loss was very much felt by everybody”.

Pte. Harrison was given a full military funeral, at which practically the whole Company was present.
