KILLED - Mr and Mrs William Denton, of 59 Queen-street, Rushden, have received news that their son, Pte Walter Denton, of the Royal Sussex Regiment, was killed in action about March 27th. The deceased worked for Messrs. B Denton and Sons, for 25 years. He was 39 years of age and leaves a widow. Mr and Mrs Denton have another son serving in France.

The Late Pte. Walter Denton

Pte. Walter Denton, Royal Sussex Regiment, husband of Mrs. Denton, of Wellingborough, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Denton, of 59, Queen-street, Rushden, has been officially reported as killed in action on March 27th. Pte. Denton joined up in August 1917, and went to France in December. Before enlisting he was employed at Messrs. Denton’s boot factory, Rushden, for 25 years. He was 39 years of age. The soldier has a brother, Robert, of the M.G.C. in France.

A Popular Sportsman - Lays Down his Life for His Country

We regret to report that a well-known sportsman, in the person of Pte Walter Denham [sic] (Royal Sussex Regt.) was killed in action on March 28th. The official notification has been received, and also a letter from Capt. B.C. Gorringe, who says: "He will be greatly missed by all of his comrades, whose sympathy with you in your great loss I am desired to express." The late soldier was the third son of Mr and Mrs Wm. Denham, of 59, Queen-street, Rushden, and his wife, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Chas. Horn, resides with her parents at 76, Gold-street, Wellingborough. Pte Denham was an excellent footballer and cricketer, and some years ago played for both the county elevens. He joined the army last August, and went out to France just before Christmas. Formerly, he was employed by Messrs. B Denton and Son, Rushden.
