Another Rushden Hero’s Death

We are deeply sorry to have to record the official confirmation of the reported death in action of Private Bert Cowley, of the 1st Northants, of Rushden. He was killed on the 9th of May while facing the enemy. As we stated in a previous issue the deceased warrior joined Kitchener’s Army in September and went to the front in France in February. The deceased soldier was highly respected in the town, and the deepest sympathy will be felt for his relatives and friends.

Rushden Soldier Killed - Pte Bert Cowley - Another Victim of Aubers Ridge - The Fatal Sunday

We regret to report the sad news that Miss Nellie Cowley, of 63 Victoria-road, Rushden, has now heard from official sources that her brother, Pte H A Cowley, of the 1st Northants, was killed in action on May 9th.

The news was sent to Rushden some weeks ago in a letter Pte Reynolds, of Rushden, wrote to his mother who resides at Washbrook-road, Rushden, and in view of this Miss Cowley wrote several times to the War Office, but only received definite news last Friday. The late Pte Cowley, who enlisted last September, was employed by Messrs. William Green and Sons, before leaving Rushden. He was 27 years of age and was well known amongst his associates as "Sam" Cowley. Miss Cowley has another brother, Pte J Cowley, serving in HM's forces, and he expects to leave England for the Dardenelles in a week or two.
