Rushden Soldier Killed - Gunner F Clarke Lays Down His Life For King and Country
We regret to announce that Gunner F Clarke, 59992, 84th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, serving with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, has been killed in action. Deceased, who was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Clarke, of 49 Robert-street, Rushden, was 32 years of age, and was an unmarried man.
For a long period the deceased, who was an expert trimmer, worked in the boot factory of Messrs. Jaques and Clark, and he subsequently entered the employ of Mr Tarry, Harborough-road.
On the outbreak of war he enlisted in Lord Kitchener's Army and joined the Royal Filed Artillery. Subsequently he returned home, suffering from a broken wrist, the result of an accident at Woolwich, and also from general ill-health, and was discharged from the Army. Last September, having fully recovered his health, he again volunteered for active service, with the stipulation that he should be allowed to rejoin his old regiment, and this was done. He was sent to Woolwich, and from there to Brighton. Being an excellent mechanic he was transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery and was sent to Bexhill. On Dec. 4th last he left England for Alexandria, Egypt, where on Jan. 31st, he met his death, doing his duty for King and country. Deceased, as a lad, went through the Park-road Baptist Sunday school, Rushden.
He has a brother Pte Horace Clarke, serving with the 7th Northamptons in France.
Mr and Mrs Clarke desire to express their sincere thanks to the Rushden Baptists and other friends for sympathy shown to them in their bereavement.

Rushden Soldier Victims - Two Brave Brothers Lay Down Their Lives
Mr and Mrs Charles Clarke, of 49 Robert-street, Rushden, have now received official news that their youngest son, Pte Horace Clarke, Northants Regt, was killed in action on Nov. 24th, while serving with B.E.F. in France. He was 22 years of age. It will be remembered that deceased's brother, Gunner F Clarke, Royal Garrison Artillery, aged 32, died while on active service in Egypt on Feb. 1st, this year. Both entered the army voluntarily and have now made the supreme sacrifice.
