Rushden Victim of the War - Private GW Burt - Killed in Egypt
We regret to report that Mr and Mrs G Burt, of 7 Wentworth-road, Rushden, have received news from official sources that their son, Pte G W Burt, of the Northants Regt, was killed in action in Egypt on April 19th. The late Pte Burt, who was 22 years of age, enlisted two years ago, and set sail with his unit for Egypt twelve months ago last Easter. As a lad he passed through St Peter's Sunday school, and for some time was a member of the Church Lad's Brigade. Later, he attended the Park-road Baptist Church, where he joined the Senior Bible class. His name is inscribed on the Roll of Honour of that church. His last letter to his parents was dated April 14th, and in that he mentioned that he had been through a big battle, but had got through safely.
Mr and Mrs Burt have received many expression of sympathy in their bereavement, and desire us to express their thanks to all who have shown their kindly thought.

Rushden Victim of the War Private GW Burt Comrades' Tribute
We recently reported that Pte G W Burt (Rushden), of the Northants Regt., was official reported as killed in action at the battle of Gaza on April 19th. His parents, Mr and Mrs G Burt, of 7 Wentworth-road, Rushden, have now received further information concerning his death, the news being sent in a letter under date April 25th, signed jointly by two of the deceased soldier's comrades, Pte F Ablett and E Cory. They write:
"We have the a very painful duty to perform in telling you of your son's death. We expect you have received the sad news by now, but we thought we ought to write to you, as he was one of our best chums. No doubt you will be pleased to hear that he suffered no pain whatsoever. We sympathise very much, for we ourselves miss him very much, for we have been together almost the whole time we have been here. Perhaps you will be glad to know a very touching service was held for the officers and men who fell in the fighting. We think this is all we can say, hoping these few lines will reach you safely and bring you some comfort in your sad bereavement."

BURT - In loving memory of Pte George William Burt, 201086, - Northants Regt., the beloved son of Mr and Mrs G J Burt, of 7 Wentworth-road, Rushden, who was killed in action in Egypt on Aril 19th, 1917, aged 22 years.
A year has passed and still we miss him;
Folk may think the wound is healed
But little know they of the sorrow
That's oft beneath a smile concealed.
But the hardest part is yet to come,
When the heroes all reach home,
And we miss among the cheering thong
The face of our dear one.
