Rushdenites in the Dunes Battle - A Mons Hero

Rushden people have received official information of Rushden soldiers missing after the Dunes Battle viz.: ... Pte A Ayres, of Oswald road, Pte A Bates, Hayway, Pte Bert Chettle, Cromwell road... It will be remembered that Pte Ayres had a bullet right through the jaws at Mons. Our portrait of him, taken after convalescence, showed the scar in the jaws. He gave a thrilling account of the battle.

See Conditions at the Front - 1914 for letters by Pte A Ayres.
