Walter Batchelor was born10th January 1921 at 21 Chapel Street Wednesbury in the county of Stafford. His father, Walter Batchelor, was employed as a crane driver at an iron and steel works and married Phoebe Marson. They had three other children; Thomas, Florence and Mary.
Walter met Gladys Hulatt while stationed in Rushden and they married on 24th January 1942 when they were both aged 21.
The Regiment was evacuated from France 30th May 1940 and moved to Rushden on 19th November 1940. They left Rushden on 11th August 1942 and returned to France overnight 12/13 August 1944, then crossed Dutch border at near a hamlet called Petter 17th September 1944.*
Walter was killed in action on 17th September 1944 when his son Robert was just 12 days old.
